NH Section History and those that Served

Prior to 1926, the position of Section Manager, as we know it today, did not exist. Between 1920 and 1923, what is now the Atlantic Division Manager managed the New Hampshire Section. The administration for the state of New Hampshire was handled by the Division Manager, with an Assistant Division Manager assigned to each state.

The New England Division, as it is known today, was formed from the Atlantic Division. At that time, the Atlantic Division Manager was C.A. Service (no call found), with Guy Entwistle (no call found) serving as the Assistant Division Manager until June 1920, when Entwistle became the New England Division Manager. Between 1923 and 1926, the area that would become the New Hampshire Section was managed by H.R. McLane (ADM). Around 1926, the New Hampshire Section was established and managed by the Section Communication Manager (SCM), a title that was later changed to Section Manager (SM).

The first issue of QST was published in December 1915, consisting of 26 pages. However, QST was not published between October 1917 and May 1919, as amateur operators were not allowed to listen or transmit during the war years, which left the League without the funds necessary to publish the magazine.

The longest-serving Section Manager was Bob Mitchell, W1NH, who held the position for 21 years. The second longest-serving Section Manager was Al Shuman, K1AKS, who served for 17 years and 5 months. Dorothy Evans, the wife of Carl Evans of Evans Radio fame, became the SCM after Carl went to war in 1940. Their combined service lasted 9 years and 5 months.

The first recorded New Hampshire League member was R.F. Howe of Keene, with the call sign "1CR." In January 1916, the League's membership stood at 961.
